Training should be viewed over the whole year.  The long-term goal of making the athlete a better player can only be achieved through a progressive development program.  Therefore, each phase of the training should be optimized to flow smoothly into the next phase.

Planning for and incorporating recovery techniques is an essential part of the training process and often the one most frequently forgotten.  During periods of increased physical loading and mental stress, special attention to the recovery process is essential and may play a vital role in assisting athlete durability and the maintenance of high work outputs. Recovery strategies include passive rest (sleep), active recovery and sound nutritional practices.
